The Government today informed that 62 out of 71 Special CBI Courts are functional in the Country and for the remaining 9 Courts, the matter is being pursued with the concerned State Governments for making them functional at the earliest. Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Shri V.Narayanasamy said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha that 3 Courts in Delhi, 4 in Odisha and 1 in Goa are yet to become functional, while concurrence of the Haryana Government has not been received for one additional special court at Panchkula. He said, the Supreme Court has been monitoring the progress of setting up of special additional courts after in its verdict on CBI Versus Saurin Rasiklal Shah & others in 2003, the Apex Court directed the Central Government to sanction the same for expeditious disposal of cases filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and other contemporaneous statues. The Supreme Court also directed the CBI, the State Governments and High Courts to file latest status reports during subsequent hearings of the case. The Minister submitted that during the hearing in the case on 15.02.2011, the Supreme Court had taken stock of the progress achieved in establishment of 71 special courts sanctioned by the Central Government and it was brought to the notice of the Apex Court that only 10 such courts had become functional by then, but as of now 62 special courts are functional.
